Dear Barrie Community Health Centre Community,

We would like to provide an important update regarding our current COVID-19 strategy. Our top priority is the health and wellbeing of our clients, staff and community members. Below is a list of precautionary measures being taken by our clinic:

BCHC Group Programs

  • The BCHC has postponed all in-person group programs and workshops until further notice.

BCHC Services Available

  • Social Work – All one-on-one social work counselling appointments will be conducted via phone. Same day appointments are also being provided. To access services, ask your family physician or nurse
  • practitioner to send a counselling referral on your behalf or call reception at 705-734-9690
  • Physiotherapy – All physiotherapy appointments have been cancelled at this time and wellness checks will be completed by phone from the Physiotherapists as needed
  • Dietitian – All appointments will be conducted via phone or video conferencing.
  • Diabetes– All appointments will be conducted via phone or in person if requested by the patient. All patients will be actively screened for COVID-19.
  • Virtual Visits-Some appointments are being made available through e-visits or OTN via the desktop computer. In person OTN visits are temporarily not being scheduled.

Primary Care Appointments

  • If you need to book an appointment with your Physician, Nurse Practitioner or the clinic Nurse, all bookings must be done over the phone. The BCHC will not be open to walk-ins seeking an appointment, as we will be doing active screening prior to each appointment.
  • Your request for an appointment will be triaged to determine if the appointment can be handled over the phone, using video technology or if an in-person, face-to-face visit is required.
  • If you are scheduled for an in-person appointment, you will be screened for COVID-19 at the time of booking and again on-site at the point of entry for your appointment.
  • If you have an appointment scheduled at the BCHC and develop COVID-19 symptoms prior to the day of your appointment, please DO NOT COME TO THE BCHC and call the clinic at 705-734-9690 to inform reception of the change in your health.

Self-Assessment Screening Tool

If you think you have COVID-19 symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has it, please use this self-assessment to help determine if you need to seek further care.

Given the high number of referrals, we are currently not accepting any new referrals.  Please check back.  Thank you.

This program is offered by Registered Dietitians/Registered Nurses and medically managed by Dr. Diane Zatelny, MD FCRP (C) at the Barrie Community Health Centre.

Many people will change their eating patterns or add more activity to lose weight, but tend to find that, over time, they may return to their starting weight. The My Best Weight Program has been developed to help individuals achieve and maintain their best weight using cognitive behavioural strategies, self-monitoring and dietary assessment.

Your best weight is the weight you achieve while living the healthiest lifestyle you can truly enjoy.”

Who can be referred?
Adults (aged 18+) with a BMI of 30 or greater, or those with a BMI of 27-30 with comorbidities (i.e. hypertension or diabetes). We accept referrals from medical practitioners such as your family doctor.

What then?
A fter you have been referred by your family physician or nurse practitioner you will be contacted by our administrative staff.  Your first appointment is a
group information session where you will learn more about the program and why we now know obesity is a chronic disease.  If you would like to continue in the program, we will rebook you for a one-on-one appointment with either a Registered Nurse or Registered Dietitian.  In your appointments, you and your Nurse/Dietitian will focus on behaviours, thoughts and emotions around eating and activity. We will provide support to focus on your personal overeating triggers; spot the barriers and help create a pathway to success.  We will also talk about the option to use medication or surgery to support you in your weight-loss journey. If you are interested in these treatments, your Nurse/Dietitian will arrange an appointment with  Dr. Zatelny for additional care.

mbw2How often will I be seen?
We offer flexibility with follow-up appointments to match your lifestyle.  When starting the program, we will usually ask to see you every 2-4 weeks either in-person, via email, video or telephone.  Your program will last approximately 1 year
after which we will send you back to your doctor for continued care.

What can I expect?
Research shows that a modest weight loss of 5 – 10% of your body weight can improve your health significantly. Our goal is to help you boost energy levels, increase confidence and improve your overall health by helping you meet the 5 - 10% weight loss goal.

Please note: there is no “prescribed” diet and we do not give out meal plans.

Current wait times:
Group Information Sessions: 3-4 months
Individual appointments: An additional 1-2 months
